A snow-scattered field couldn't slow down top-ranked Long Island C.W. Post men's lacrosse team, as they defeated the Queens University of Charlotte, 14-6, at the Queens Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. Snow showers from the previous night led to players, coaches, and administrators clearing the field with shovels hours before the game. The effort allowed the game to start after a short delay.
Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) put the Royals on the board first, but that lead didn't last long as the visiting Pioneers went on to score nine of the game's next 11 goals.
Keith Rodriguez started the run for C.W. Post, scoring back-to-back goals, just over two minutes apart.
Queens fought back with six minutes remaining in the half, receiving goals six seconds apart from
T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon) and
Joe Taylor (Aurburn, N.Y., Auburn). Both goals came on the advantage. Whaley's goal was followed by Taylor winning the faceoff and taking it coast-to-coast for the score to bring the Royals within three.
The Pioneers capped off the first-half scoring 29 seconds later with a short-handed goal from Brad DeSouza to take a 7-3 lead into the break.
C.W. Post would add to their lead in the third quarter. Scoring his second and third goals of the game, Joe Meo took the Pioneers into the fourth quarter with a 5-11 lead.
Boyal would score his third and Queens' final goal with 10:02 remaining in the game.
The Royals were outshot 24-35, including an 11-20 disadvantage in shots on target.
Queens'
Mike Delallo (Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee) won .444 of his face offs, while Mike Cama won 15 of his 23 face offs.
Rob Bacharach (Baltimore, Md., Dulaney) (0-1) gathered six saves in goal for Queens. His counterpart, Mike Giordano (1-0), collected five saves to earn his first victory of the season.
Queens' next game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. faceoff on Saturday, February 20th at Pfeiffer University.
