CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Queens University of Charlotte Men's Soccer played their first game at their new home stadium, Queens Sports Complex, Friday night against Newberry College. In a game loaded with aggressive defense, Queens held Newberry to just 1 SOG en route to earning their first win of the season, 1-0.
After a stagnant first half, Queens dominated the second half and frequently worked the ball into the Newberry zone. It wasn't until 69:27 that a shot by D.J. Short (Midlothian, Va., Clover Hill) was mishandled by Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson to put the Royals up 1-0. Johnson would later be replaced by Pedro Velazquez after sustaining an injury at 82:04.
With a one-goal lead and more than 20 minutes left in the second half, Queens would continue to apply pressure on both ends of the field. While adding five shots to their stat line, the Royals maintained their intensity defensively, holding Newberry without a shot in the final 29:07.
Queens out-shot the Reds 15-9 in the game and tallied six corner kicks to their one.
Goalkeeper Chris Raines (Aurora, Colo., Cherokee Trail) earned the shut out for Queens.
Queens, 1-1 overall, will travel to the University of North Carolina – Pembroke on Sunday before visiting rival Anderson University for their Conference Carolinas opener on September 12th.
