Limestone spoils Queens Sports Complex Grand Opening

Men’s soccer falls 3-0 to visiting Saints

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens Royals men's soccer team was unable to comeback from a 2-0 halftime deficit against the Limestone Saints. At the end of the 90 minute contest the Saints (4-3-0/2-1-0) defeated Queens (3-4-0/1-3-0) by a score of 3-0.

The Conference Carolinas contest was the second of two soccer games during the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park's Grand Opening weekend.

Ali Benson scored what would be the game-winner in the 29th minute of play unassisted. Benson poked the ball past keeper Chris Raines (Aurora, Colo., Cherokee Trail) in a fast-break, one on one play.

The Saints struck again less than two minutes later when Lee Smyth flicked the ball over the Royals defense and Scott Wells finished the play.

At the half, Limestone held a three shot advantage, 8-5, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The contest was a physical one with a total of 23 fouls, 11 against Queens and 12 for Limestone.

An insurance goal was added by the Saints in the 48th minute when Less Smyth was assisted by Keegan Ziada.

Forsan Radwan (Richmond, Va., James River) led the Royals offense with five shots. As a team Queens tallied 11, but only had two on goal.

Smyth led the visiting team with four of the 19 shots. Of the 19, 12 were on goal.

Raines made seven saves in the contest and his counterpart, Mark Davidson, made two.

Today's home game was the first of four consecutive home games for Queens. Up next is Coker College on Sept. 30 at 5pm.
