Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Contest to No. 7 Gannon

Wrightson scores three in the non-conference loss

WINTER PARK, Fla. - After being tied at five-all at the conclusion of the first half, the Queens women's lacrosse team dropped the non-conference contest to No. 7 Gannon 20-9 in Winter Park, Fla.

The Royals (2-3/2-2 Conference Carolinas) took a 2-1 lead just over 10 minutes into the first half with goals from Kelly Wrightson (Germantown, Md., Damascus ) and Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md., John Carroll). Gannon (2-1) took the lead back, after leading 1-0, after the teams exchanged goals.

Casey tied the contest up at five two minutes before the horn signaled the end of the first half.

In the first 30 minutes of play, Queens held a one goal edge in shots, 19-18, but were trailing in ground back pick-ups, 23-15, and draw controls, 9-2.

The second half was a different story for the Royals. After giving up two goals, Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn. , Robinsdale Cooper ) cut the lead back down to one, 7-6, but Golden Knights again scored two, pulling back out in front 9-6.

Brittany Philip (Painted Post, N.Y., East), with an assist from Duffey, put Queens back within two, but that's when the game changed. In the remaining 20:51, Gannon outscored the Royals 11-2.

The Golden Knights out-shot Queens 22-9 in the second stanza. Though still trailing in ground balls and draw controls, the Royals improved. Queens picked up 14 of 33 ground balls and won 50 percent of the draw controls.

Wrightson led the offense with three goals, Casey had two. In goal, Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md., North Carroll ) made 12 saves.

For Gannon, Taryn Millerd scored eight and Krista Schunk netted six. Goalie Acacia Cook had 14 saves.

Queens looks to rebound on Tuesday against Rollins, also in Winter Park, Fla.
