CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In the doubleheader at Park Road Park this afternoon feature Queens and Augusta State, both games on the twinbill took extra innings to decide a winner. Augusta State (24-15) came from behind to win the first game 5-4 in 11 innings and the Jaguars scored two in the eighth for the 6-4 win in game two. Queens falls to 13-16 on the season.
The Royals recorded a new season-high 11 hits, at bats, 35, and runners left on base, 10.
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawatchee) and Brittany Stephens (Charlotte, N.C., Hickory Grove Baptist) both pitched two complete games. Dodge saw action in the first game, giving up 10 hits and striking out four batters. In eight innings, Stephens struck out five and gave up 11 hits.
Queens is slated to host Lander on April 1 at 5pm.
Game 1
Queens posted the first two runs in the bottom of the third. A fly out by Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive ) drove in Mary Lee Giurintano (Greensboro, N.C. , Glenn ) for the first run. Alisha Waldrop (McDonough, GA , Luella ) singled on the next play and drove in Kari Kmetic (Milwaukie, Ore., Putnam). The Royals closed the inning on a ground out and left one on base.
A double by Kacee Camp to start the fourth inning put the Jaguars in position to score early in the inning. Queens held Augusta state to just one run in the inning.
The visitors tied it up in the fifth, but they had the chance to take the lead, but strong defensive play by centerfielder Amanda Bowman (Kernersville, N.C,, Glenn) and Giurintano got the go-ahead run out at home.
At the end of regulation the teams were still tied at two-all.
Augusta State scored one in the top of the 10th, but Queens answered back. Giurintano singled up the middle to driving in base runner Audra Littlejohn (Riverside, Calif., Centennial ) to keep the game alive and force an 11th inning.
A combination of stolen bases and a double by Kristen Jones put the Jaguars up 5-3.
Stephens singled to bring in one run and put Queens within one run, but the offense ran out of time and lost the game 5-4.
Game 2
For the second time of the evening, Queens started the scoring putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. The Royals connected on four pitches, including a triple from by Campbell.
Augusta State cut the lead down to one in the third.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth when more runs were driven in. Augusta State started the inning converting three hits into two runs, taking the lead 3-2.
Queens answered with one run sparked by a double from Waldrop. Once on base, Waldrop was brought home with a single by Stephens. On the day Stephens had two RBIs.
Alysha Krier's single in the top of the seventh gave the Jaguars a one run lead, driving in Angii Verbeelen.
As the Royals normally do, they rallied when it mattered and tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh. Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) started the inning off with her third triple of the season. Giurintano was walked and now Queens had the tying and go ahead runs on base. Bowman stepped to the plate and bunted to bring in Turner and advance Giurintano to third. The next two batters for Queens weren't able to connect and the game was sent into extra innings.
Jones homered for the visitors in the top of the eighth, clearing the bases and posting two runs.
The Queens offense couldn't find their normal last inning juice and went down one, two, three.
Bowman led the team with four hits in the game.
The Jaguars used three pitchers to win the game and the three combined to strike out seven Royals. Sara DeMuth picked up both wins for Augusta State.
