Women’s Lacrosse Snaps Nine-Game Slide

Royals defeat Lees-McRae 17-11

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Women's Lacrosse snaps a nine-game slide today with a convincing 17-11 win over Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. Brittany Philip (Painted Post, N.Y., East) and Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y. , Geneva) each scored four for the Royals in the win.

The game was called 80 percent in, as the weather did not allow for the game to be played to full regulation.

The Royals started the game scoring seven unanswered goals. Queens' defense held off the Bobcats offense until the 12 minutes left in the first half.

Queens answered, scoring three more before the break. Lees-McRae managed to score two more in the first 30, ending the half with a score of 10-3.

Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) scored three of the 10 while Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn. , Robinsdale Cooper ) contributed three assists.

Lees-McRae came out blazing in to start the second half, scoring five goals in five minutes. Martin broke up the Bobcat run with a goal at the 27 minute mark.

The Royals thwarted the Bobcats comeback with back-to-back goals from Philip and Duffey that came 26 seconds apart. The Royals goals slowed down the game and held the Bobcats to two goals in the next five minutes. Kelly Wrightson (Germantown, Md., Damascus ) started a three-goal run for Queens, all within one minute of play.

The Bobcats notched one more, but Martin followed it up and scored the last goal of the game with just six ticks left on the clock.

In addition to Martin and Philip's four goals apiece, Duffey scored one and threw in five assists. Wrightson and O'Rourke each had a hat trick in the victory.

Queens held the advantage in shots, 31-24, and draw controls, 15-11. Lees-McRae had the edge in ground balls, 30-22, and scored on four of five free position shots.

Tiffany Paris netted five of the Bobcats 11 goals while Desiree Cox scored four and Cheryse Cox had two.

Queens hosts Erskine College on Saturday, March 28 at 2pm. During halftime of the game Queens will honor their seniors.
