CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Royals men's lacrosse team snapped a two-game slide with a 11-10 overtime win over Conference Carolinas rival Belmont Abbey College. The win puts Queens (3-4/2-1 CC) in second place behind Pfeiffer in the league. The loss drops Belmont Abbey to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference.
The score was deadlocked at 10 at the end of regulation, Queens' Stephan LeBlanc (Restoule, Ontario, Highland) found Brian Masterson (Toledo, Ohio, St. Johns) just 1:53 into the period for the game-winner.
The Royals offense was led by Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) with five goals, while Brian Lipscomb (Hilton Head, S.C., Hilton Head ) contributed three.
Queen battled during the first half. After one quarter the hosts held a three goal advantage, 6-3, but Queens answered with three to start the second quarter. At the half the Royals were just one goal behind.
The scoring action slowed down in the third. Belmont Abbey scored two and Queens one.
Boyle scored his fifth goal to start the fourth quarter and put Queens back within one. The Crusaders answered, extending the lead to 10-8. Lipscomb scored the ninth Queens goal with 2:44 left on the clock and a big save by goalie Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) with 2:38 left to play kept the Royals in the game.
With 2:18 left on the clock, Limpscomb struck again, tying the game at 10.
Belmont Abbey's Dave DiLuigi led the way with three goals, while Miles Elliott had a pair.
Queens trailed in shots 29-37 and needed just one during the overtime period. The Royals led in ground balls, 42-38, as Cory Thomas (Columbia, Md., River Hill) had nine and Macknew had six. In face-offs, Queens dominated the Crusaders winning 16-24. Mike Delallo (Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee) won 14 of the six and Thomas had the other two.
Macknew made nine saves in the contest while Belmont Abbey's goalie, Tony Kikola, made eight.
