CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Kelly Wrightson (Germantown, Md., Damascus ) scored three goals in the Conference Carolinas loss to Belmont Abbey College Thursday night in women's lacrosse action. The visiting Crusaders (7-3/4-3 CC) won the women's lacrosse game 17-8 in what started out as a beautiful afternoon and turned into a cold, wet game.
Also scoring multiple goals for the Royals(2-7/2-3 CC) were Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn. , Robinsdale Cooper ), two, and Brittany Philip (Painted Post, N.Y., East), two.
Queens trailed for most of the first half until Wrightson scored on a free position shot to tie the game at six-all with 4:49 left in the first half.
The Abbey scored two in the remaining 4:49 to take a two goal lead into halftime, 8-6. At the half Queens goalie Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md., North Carroll ) had made nine of her 15 saves, while Belmont's Kate Gavin blocked one of her six.
Megan Darley started a six goal run for the Crusaders just over two minutes into the second period.
Wrightson again scored on a free position shot. The goal cut the Abbey lead in half.
The Crusaders' Brianna Digan answered the Royals goal, but Queens challenged again. Philip scored with an assist coming from Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y. , Geneva).
Queens' defense shut the visitors' offense down for a 10 minute stretch, not giving up a goal. Belmont Abbey was able to get two more past Markle in the last 5:29 for the 17-8 win.
Dignan led Belmont Abbey with five goals. Shannon Farden, Laurie Jordan and Tara Chmil each contributed three.
