No. 10 Saints Edge Men’s Lacrosse

Leighton leads Royals with three

GAFFNEY, S.C.- No. 10 Limestone College edged Queens University of Charlotte in men's lacrosse action 14-8.

The Saints (1-1/1-1 CC) used a seven goal first quarter to pick up the win over the Royals (1-1/1-1 CC).  Queens gave up two goals to start the game when B.J. Leighton (Apex, NC, Apex) put Queens on the board four minutes into play. Limestone scored five more goals, one in a man-up opportunity, before Queens closed the quarter with a goal from Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air).

The Royals offense was methodical in the second quarter, using long possessions to grind the score to 7-4 on goals from Leighton and Brian Rose (Stony Point, N.Y., North Rockland). The Royals defense held Limestone to seven shots in the 15 minute period, the lowest of all four quarters, while the offense was able to take nine. Just before the half ended Limestone put one more on the board to take an 8-4 lead midway through.

Limestone used an offensive push to score two quickly in the third, but Queens used man-advantage opportunity to score. Stephan LeBlanc (Restoule, Ontario, Highland) tallied his only goal of the game with the help of Cory Thomas (Columbia, Md., River Hill). Twenty three seconds later Leighton scored his third goal, unassisted. Each team scored one more before the quarter ended.

Queens racked up the shots in the fourth quarter, 11 for the most in a period, but they were only able to get one past James Tuohy. Limestone scored three on eight shots, giving them the 14-8 win.

The Royals led by Leighton with three goals while Limestone's Brendan Storrier scored the game-high five.

Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) played between the pipes for Queens, making 17 saves on 39 shots and giving up 14 goals. Tuohy made 18 saves on 32 Royals shots.

Queens returns to host Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday at 12pm at the Queens Sports Complex. Wheeling Jesuit faces Limestone on Saturday at 1pm.
