PEMBROKE, N.C.- Queens softball snapped a five game slide with a 4-3 win over UNC-Pembroke today in the second contest of a double-header.
Kari Kmetic (Milwaukie, Ore., Putnam) drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first, giving Queens (2-6/0-0 CC) the 1-0 lead. Mary Lee Giurintano (Greensboro, N.C. , Glenn ) stole home to have the Royals a 2-0 lead to start the game.
The Braves (4-10/1-1 PBC) tallied one run in each of the next three innings to go up 3-2.
Queens tied the game at 3-all in the top of the fifth with an earned run by Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive ). Alisha Waldrop (McDonough, GA , Luella ) earned the RBI as she flied out to right field.
Amanda Bowman (Kernersville, N.C,, Glenn) recorded her first RBI of the season in the sixth as she singled to right field, driving in Brittany Stephens for the 4-3 advantage.
Neither team was able to drive in any more runs in the last inning and a half, but each team did leave runners on base.
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawatchee) earned the win on the mound, giving her a record of 2-4 this season. Campbell led the offense with two hits.
In the first campaign of the afternoon, Queens fell 5-2.
To start the game, Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) was walked to get on base and stole second. A Waldrop single moved Turner to third and a Braves error allowed her to cross home plate.
UNC-P countered in the bottom of the first with a homer by Jelena Shaw, driving in three runs. The Braves scored again in the bottom of the second, adding two to the total.
Giurintano led off for Queens in the top of the fourth and reached first on a walk. Giurintano stole second and rounded third on an error by the Braves catcher. On a wild pitch, Giurintano crossed home, making the score 5-2.
Queens left the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the fifth and seven innings.
The Royals have a quick turn-around, traveling to University of South Carolina-Aiken on Monday for a non-conference double-header.
