Royals Come Out of The Abbey with a Win

Women's basketball defeats Belmont Abbey College 58-51

BELMONT, N.C.- The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped as it suffered a 58-51 defeat at the hands of the Queens University of Charlotte Royals this evening at the Wheeler Center. The Abbey falls to 17-8 overall and 15-5 in Conference Carolinas, while Queens improves to 14-11 overall and 13-7 in Conference Carolinas.

The Royals led at the half by seven shooting 57% from the floor connecting on eight of 14 field goals.

The second half proved to be a test for the Royals as each team scored 32 points for the half. The Royals continued shooting well from the floor (47%) and the crusaders improved from shooting 33% to 50% putting them back in the game.

Belmont took the lead off of a field goal by Kala Nwachukwu at the 3:06 mark, but it was soon tied back up after a free throw by Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont). Goldner then followed with a basket giving the Royals the lead for good.

Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) led all scorers with 22 points while Goldner chipped in 11. Allison Williams (Rougemont, N.C., Northern Durham) grabbed seven rebounds to go along with her seven points.

Leading the Crusaders was Kala Nwachukwu and Kelsey Daniel both led the way with 11 points apiece. Daniel led all players with eight rebounds, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot in 27 minutes. Nwachukwu sank five of her seven field goal attempts and had two assists and a steal. Ashley Giddens led the Lady Crusaders with three assists and four steals.

The Royals are back in action on Tuesday, February 24 against Mount Olive College. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
