LAURINBURG, N.C.- The Royals rolled over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College Thursday night in Conference Carolinas action. Queens University of Charlotte posted a season-high 91 points to defeat the Knights 91-45.
The Royals (7-7 Overall; 6-3 Conf.) posted the season-best score by shooting 53.8-percent (35-of-65) in the game. The Knights (1-13; 0-10) were held to chilly 23.3% (14-of-60).
Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) scored her 29 points with 14-of-19 precision from the floor. Junior Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont) bucketed 18 points; junior Ashley McGuirt (Indian Trail, N.C., Providence Day) sunk 17; and sophomore Shakendra Hicks (Rock Hill, S.C., Rock Hill) tallied 10 points for Queens.
Queens was able to take a 25-point lead at halftime, 42-17, by connecting on half of their shots, 15-of-30 (50.0%), compared to 6-of-27 (22.2%) by St. Andrews. The Royals took advantage of their free throw attempts in the opening period sinking 11-of-12 (91.7%) tries.
Goldner was 4-of-5 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes to lead all players into the locker room with 13 points. Knights' freshman Septembra LeSane (Pompano Beach, Fla.) scored all six of her points in the opening stanza.
The Royals continued to increase their lead in the second half by draining 57.1% of their shots in the final frame.
Queens held a 47-36 rebounding advantage with Hudley and McGuirt each pulling down eight boards. Queens out-scored SAPC 42-12 in the paint while the Royals defense came up with 20 steals including four swipes by both Hudley and Goldner. Freshman Jessica Lewis (Hampton, Va., Bethel) handed out a game-high six assists.
St. Andrews travels to Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday for a league showdown with Converse College at 2 p.m. Queens hosts its local arch-rival, Belmont Abbey College, in a conference class on Saturday in a 5:30 p.m.
