CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team beat Barton College in Conference Carolinas action tonight at the Ovens Athletics Center. It took five sets for Queens to get the victory and improves the Royals to 3-4 in league play and 3-11 overall. Barton drops to 0-3 in conference action and 1-9 overall.
The Royals came out swinging and defeated Barton in set one 25-16. Tamalea Pierce (Asheboro, N.C., SW Randolph )held serve for five points to give the Royals a six point lead, 22-16. From there the last points came quickly as Barton was unable to hold the serve.
The Bulldogs rallied in set two for the 25-23 win. The entire set was close with neither team gaining the upper hand.
Amanda Valbert (Champaign, Ill., Champaign Central ) served the set point in the third match for the Queens win, 25-19. The Royals gained the lead off serves from Veronica Arenander (Cincinnati, Ohio, Walnut Hill )for points 14 and 15. Queens never trailed after.
In set four Queens jumped out to an early lead, 12-6, but cut the lead down to two, 15-13, in the second rotation. Kristen Peschock gave the Bulldogs a one point lead, 17-18, and they were able to sneak away with the win, 21-25.
The Royals put up an eight points to Barton's three in the early part of set five. Strong play by the entire team limited Barton to just three more points and gave the Royals the 15-6 victory.
Arenander led the Queens attack with 16 kills. Keatin McKenzie (Coral Springs, Fla., Cardinal Gibbons )recorded the second highest for Queens with 10. Tanisha Lea (Efland, N.C., Orange Senior )and Arenander led on the defensive side with three block assists a piece.
Barton's Melissa Ritter led the team in kills, 11, and digs, 24. Stacy Way served four aces for the Bulldogs.
Queens hosts Mount Olive College tomorrow, Sat., Sept. 27 at 2pm. The Royals look for their first back-to-back wins since Oct. 7 2003, when they defeated Coker 3-1 after beating Mars Hill 3-1 on Sept. 30, 2003. The Bulldogs travel to Pfeiffer University for a 1pm start with the Falcons.
