CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team battled West Georgia in their ASUN-opening doubleheader on Friday, March 14, splitting the series with a tough 5-1 loss in the opener before bouncing back with an explosive 11-8 victory in game two. With the split, Queens moved to 6-14 on the season and evened their ASUN conference record at 1-1.
GAME ONE: Queens 1, West Georgia 5
- Queens struggled to generate offense in the opening game of the doubleheader, falling 5-1 to West Georgia. The Royals were held scoreless through the first six innings before breaking through in the seventh. Kaylee DeJesus was the standout at the plate, going 2-for-3 and driving in the team's lone run. Taylor Jones and Lindsey DeRoeck each added a double.
- Abby Craver started in the circle for the Royals, tossing six innings while allowing six hits and five earned runs. She struck out two and walked three. Queens' defense remained solid with no errors in the game.
GAME TWO: Queens 11, West Georgia 8
- The Royals bounced back in the nightcap with an explosive offensive performance, outlasting West Georgia 11-8 in a back-and-forth contest. Queens fell behind early but took the lead with a four-run sixth inning and never looked back.
- The offense was led by Taylor Jones, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Lindsey DeRoeck also had a strong showing, collecting two hits, including a solo home run, and driving in a run. Kaylee DeJesus added a two-run double as part of her three-RBI performance.
- The Royals plated their first run in the fourth before adding two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The pivotal sixth inning saw Queens explode for four runs, highlighted by Jones' home run. The Royals continued to apply pressure in the later innings, adding a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to seal the win.
- In the circle, Jordan Dunn started and went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Taylor Jones and the bullpen combined to navigate through a tough stretch in the middle innings, limiting the damage late to secure the win.
- The Royals' defense was sharp, committing just one error, while the offense tallied 12 hits in one of their best performances of the season.
