CARROLLTON, GA. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team secured a hard-fought 7-6 extra-inning victory over West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium. The Royals struck early and held off a late comeback from the Wolves to claim their second ASUN conference win of the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Queens wasted no time getting on the board, scoring early from a Kaylee DeJesus homer.
- In the second inning, the Royals tacked on two more runs to extend their lead to 3-1. Olivia Thornton delivered a clutch single, plating two runs.
- The Wolves answered back in the third inning with a two-run homer from Long to tie the game at 3-3.
- With momentum shifting, West Georgia tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, and would eventually send the game into extra innings at 4-4.
- In the top of the eighth, Queens erupted. DeJesus delivered the biggest hit of the game, launching a two-run double to left center to gain a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
- West Georgia refused to go quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the eighth. However, with the tying run on base, Queens closer Kenzie Forrester struck out three straight to finalize the win for the Royals.
.POSTGAME COMMENTS
"We knew it would be a dog fight, and we wanted to keep something up our sleeve they hadn't seen," pitching coach Sierra Vanzant-Cheek said. "Kenzie [Forrester] understands her role and is built for the big moments. We always say good things happen to good people, and Kenzie couldn't be more deserving of that save! She worked hard for that moment!"
