WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team closed out its opening weekend with a 7-1 loss to UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field. Despite a strong effort at the plate from Kaylee DeJesus, who went 3-for-3, the Royals were unable to generate enough offense to keep pace with the Seahawks.
GAME NOTABLES
- UNCW struck first, plating a run in the opening inning and adding another in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Queens' pitching and defense kept things close through three innings, but a three-run fourth by the Seahawks extended the deficit to 5-0. The home team tacked on two more runs in the fifth.
- Queens broke through in the sixth when Olivia Thornton reached base and later scored on a Natalie Windham sacrifice fly, but that would be the only run the Royals could muster against the Seahawk pitching staff.
- The Royals tallied five hits in the game, with Makala Strickland adding a hit and a walk, while Thornton contributed a hit and a run scored. Queens had several baserunners throughout the game, but the Seahawks' defense turned timely plays to prevent further damage.
- On the mound, Taylor Jones got the start, throwing two innings while allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Kenzie Forrester and Jordan Dunn combined for 4.0 innings of relief, but UNCW's offense continued to apply pressure, collecting 11 hits and stealing six bases.
"We had some highlights throughout the weekend and still trying to figure some things out across the board," Head Coach
Kella Armstrong said after the weekend. "We will go back to the drawing board this week before we play again."
