CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team secured their first shutout win of the season on Tuesday afternoon against the College of Charleston at Patriots Point behind solid pitching from Abby Craver, Taylor Jones, and Kenzie Forrester and a three-run shot from Brooke Piper in the third inning.
GAME NOTABLES
- After two scoreless innings, Queens' offense came alive in the top of the third. Makala Strickland reached base after being hit by the pitch and Lindsey Deroeck singled to left, setting the stage for Brooke Piper, who delivered a clutch three-run home run to put the Royals ahead 3-0.
- On the mound, Abby Craver stifled the Charleston lineup, pitching three shutout innings while allowing only three hits and striking out four. Her performance was aided by solid defensive plays as the team registered zero errors.
- In relief, Taylor Jones took over in the fourth inning and maintained the Royals' momentum. She pitched three innings of scoreless ball, recording three strikeouts.
- Through five innings, Queens held strong to the 3-0 lead, with Charleston struggling to generate offense against the Royals' pitching duo.
- For the next two innings, the Royals stayed firm in their lead. Kenzie Forrester would come into the circle in the bottom of the seventh and shut the Cougars out in order to secure the save and the 3-0 victory.
"Great complete team win," Head Coach Kella Armstrong, Emma Frye, and Lauren Byrd said after the game. "Very solid defense, and the pitching staff threw extremely well."
