Queens Game Notes
THE MATCHUPS
Queens and James Madison meet for just the second time in program history, with the Dukes holding a 1–0 advantage in the all-time series. The lone matchup came on Nov. 13, 2022, when JMU posted an 89–48 win in Harrisonburg. Sunday's meeting marks the Royals' first trip back to Virginia since that contest and their only matchup against a Sun Belt opponent this season. The game also serves as a homecoming for head coach
Jen Brown and assistant coach
Toia Giggetts, both former JMU standouts.
SCOUTING THE ROYALS (2–0 overall)
- Queens has opened the 2025–26 campaign with back-to-back home victories over Gardner-Webb (58–47) and Mars Hill (80–48), outscoring opponents by an average of 21.5 points per game while holding them to just 24.6 percent shooting.
- Sophommore forward Brenae Jones-Grant continues to lead the way, averaging 14.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game while shooting 70.6 percent from the floor through two contests.
- Senior guard Ana Barretto adds scoring punch from the perimeter, averaging 13.0 points and 3.0 made threes per game, hitting 33 percent from deep.
- Graduate transfer Hannah Hicks has been a consistent interior presence, averaging 8.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game.
- The Royals depth has been a strength early, with 11 players seeing action and eight contributing at least four points per game.
- Under fifth-year head coach Jen Brown, the Royals have opened 2–0 for the first time since 2022–23, when they began the year with back-to-back home wins.
SCOUTING THE DUKES (1-1 overall)
- James Madison enters Sunday's matchup looking to bounce back from a 60–58 loss at George Mason in its season opener.
- The Dukes return a talented core led by Peyton McDaniel, a two-time All-Sun Belt selection who averaged 17.1 points and 4.9 rebounds last season.
- Kiki Jefferson also remains a key contributor, averaging 16.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in 2024–25, giving JMU one of the most experienced scoring duos in the conference.
- Preseason Sun Belt favorites for the third straight year, JMU went 30–6 overall and 18–0 in league play last season, reaching the WBIT quarterfinals.
- The Dukes have been among the Sun Belt's elite defensive units, holding opponents to under 62 points per game each of the past two seasons.
- JMU finished 22–12 last year and reached the Sun Belt semifinals, highlighted by a 13–3 record at home.
- Head coach Sean O'Regan, now in his 10th season, owns a 211–82 career record and has guided the Dukes to multiple postseason appearances, including NCAA and WNIT runs during his tenure.
