2024 Queens Athletics Awards: Mark Kelso "Just Show Up" Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics is set to announce its annual department award winners across its multiple social media channels during the summer months, honoring the accomplishments of its student-athletes during the 2023-24 season.
 
The department awards will be released every Tuesday and Thursday. Today, the department is announcing the Mark Kelso "Just Show Up " Award honorees. 

Mark Kelso "Just Show Up" Award

Presented by the athletics department for a student-athlete who has made a difference in the Queens Athletics Department by 'just showing up'. Particular emphasis will be on game attendance, demonstrated acts of school spirit, and visibility within the athletics department.

This award was initiated as a result of Dr. Mark Kelso's Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award speech at fall convocation in 2017. Dr. Kelso is a political science and international studies professor and a loyal supporter of Queens Athletics. Each athlete listed below has been identified by their respective coaching staff for impacting the program positively. 

Male Winner - Ty Hurdle, Men's Volleyball

Hurdle was a difference maker for the men's volleyball team and athletic department in ways. He attended many athletic events during his time at Queens and always made his presence felt. He was a passionate supporter of the women's basketball team. His internship this spring with the athletic marketing department showcased his love of athletics, his hard work, and reliability to the department. 

Female Winner - Frances Huffman, Field Hockey

Huffman was a volunteer team manager for men's volleyball for 3 years. She also managed
women's rugby and worked with the facilities and events team this past year. She is a huge supporter of Queens Athletics, having a great network across most sports. When she stepped away from field hockey as a player for one season and served as the team manager assisting wherever necessary.
