CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte head men's basketball coach
Grant Leonard is pleased to welcome Leo Colimerio to the Royals program as a member of the 2024 signing class. Colimerio joins the Royals following four seasons at Fresno State University.
"Getting a player of Leo's experience and caliber from the Mountain West is a coup for Queens," said Leonard. "Leo is versatile, efficient, skilled, and will really grow here in Charlotte. It wouldn't shock any of us if Leo developed into an All-ASUN player here."
Colimerio, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil was a heavily recruited basketball player out of high school receiving interest from Fresno State, BYU, California, Colorado, Oregon State, Utah State, and Washington State. Colimerio spent four seasons at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, averaging 8.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game his senior season. His success playing for one of the nation's most prolific academies landed him a spot at Fresno State where he spent four seasons.
Colimerio appeared in 18 games in his rookie campaign, including his first collegiate start against New Mexico. The 6-7 product averaged 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 48 percent from the field. Against Fresno Pacific, the forward scored a season-high six points to help the Bulldogs claim a 78-65 victory.
Colimerio continued to develop and earned 36 appearances, including 33 starts in his sophomore season. The forward averaged 5.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game across 25.3 minutes of work. Colimerio shot an efficient 60 percent from the field and scored a season-high 17 points against Eastern Washington in the 2022 Basketball Classic. The performance at the classic earned him All-Tournament Team nods. On the season, Colimerio registered five double-figure scoring contests.
In his junior season, Colimerio made 31 appearances, including 21 starts, averaging 5.3 points and 3.4 rebounds. Colimerio remained efficient shooting 52 percent from the field and a team-best 87 percent from the free throw line. Against Colorado State, Colimerio poured in a season-high 19 points across 21 minutes of work as he finished the year with three games in double figures.
Last season, the forward made 13 starts while appearing in 33 games. Colimerio averaged 6.7 points per game, a career-high mark in a season, while also pulling down 3.8 rebounds. Against UNLV, Colimerio dropped a career-high 30 points on an incredible 10-of-13 shooting performance. Colimerio reached double figures in seven outings on the year which was the most in a single season for the Brazil native.
"I am very blessed and grateful for the opportunity to play and attain my master's as a Royal," said Colimerio. "I'm excited to be here to start this new chapter of my life. I can't wait for the season to start and meet all the fans!"
Colimerio will join the Royals as a graduate transfer and have one season of eligibility.
The Royals are coming off their second season in Division 1 which included their second straight ASUN Tournament appearance. Queens took down FGCU in the opening round of the ASUN Tournament before falling to the eventual tournament champion in Stetson. The Royals faced a challenging schedule which included Elite Eight opponents in #9 Duke and #14 Clemson. Despite the tough slate, Queens ranked 10
th in the country in adjusted tempo and averaged 80.1 points per game which was fourth-most in the ASUN.
