CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team fell to the Golden Griffins of Canisius by a score of 7-2 on the campus of UNC Charlotte on Sunday, Feb. 18.
Kayla Smith opened up the day with a single to left field and put herself in scoring position with a steal to second base. Kasidi Staley walked next, putting two Royals on base before a fielder's choice got out the lead runner and the next two batters went down in order to retire the side.
The Golden Griffins opened up scoring on the day with a three-run homer from Gianna Fazzolari and a two-run homer from Hanna Hagerman in the first inning.
In the bottom of the third, Brooke Piper put the Royals on the board with a solo shot to left field, marking the first home run in her early Queens career. Despite the momentum, Kate Wiggins was able to hold off Queens from the circle.
Canisius would find another run in the bottom of the fourth after a hit from Gomez would send a Griffin home to put their lead at 6-1. Kenzie Forrester would slow the Griffin bats with a finalizing strike out to get the Royals back to the dugout where they would sadly be unable to get a baserunner.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, back-to-back singles up through the left side put two runners on base for the Griffins before an RBI double from Sydney Costan would put their squad's lead up by a 7-2 score.
When Queens got their bats back in the top of the sixth, Abby Craver would come up big and cut her squad's deficit to five before a double play ball and a flyout would retire the side. The Griffins would go through a three-up, three-down inning in the bottom of the sixth, but the Royals would fail to capitalize in their final at-bat opportunity in the seventh.
Wiggins took home the win in the circle for Canisius, putting her record at 1-1. Jordan Dunn would take the loss in the circle, putting her record at 1-2.
The Royals would whip up six hits on the day, and commit zero errors.
