CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team got their revenge on the Golden Griffins on Queens' home field with a grand-slam mercy-rule winner from Kaylee DeJesus on Monday, Feb. 19. The 8-0 win for the Royals put their overall record at 4-5, while the Griffins fall to 1-4 on the season.
SCORING SUMMARY
Queens opened up scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a double to left center from Abby Craver. Makala Strickland next came up big for the Royals with a single down the right field line, scoring Craver to give their squad the 1-0 lead going into the third.
Autumn Courtney was unstoppable in the circle, holding the Griffins off while Queens made waves with the bats. The Royals found another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth after Brooke Piper brought in another run to put the score at 2-0.
Soon in the bottom of the fifth, a leading walk from Strickland followed by a throwing error from Canisius allowed another Royals run to score. With a runner on base, an RBI single from Ashlyn Mickler would allow for Kella Goins' squad to take a convincing 4-0 lead.
It wouldn't be until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Royals would score again — with a game-ending grand slam from Kaylee DeJesus to right center. The home run marks the third of her career, and her second in Division I play.
Courtney finished her day in the circle swiping 12 strikeouts and allowing only three hits in six innings of work.
REMARKS FROM HEAD COACH KELLA GOINS
"Yesterday, we didn't have our A-game, and we were able to get on base but we couldn't bring them home," Head Coach Kella Goins said postgame. "Today we worked counts well and we were able to push some runs across home plate instead of leaving them stranded."
UP NEXT
Up next, the Royals face the Presbyterian Blue Hose in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 21. First pitch is slated for 1:00 PM at the Stick.
