CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte softball team fell to the Boston University Terriers by a score of 7-0 in their second game of the UNC Charlotte Tournament at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 17.
With Autumn Courtney in the circle to start the day, Boston U pounced early and put three runners on in the bottom of the first before Courtney forced two popouts and a liner to left field to get out of the inning.
In the top of the second, a leadoff walk from Haley Hmiel put a runner on base for the Royals before a fielder's choice and two strikeouts kept Boston U out of further damage.
In the top of the third, Kaylee DeJesus was able to snag the only Royals hit of the day with a double to centerfield, but Kasey Ricard would hold Queens off in the half-inning. The Terriers got on the board after a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the inning, but that would be all the Terriers could bring home before Courtney and her defense retired the side.
In the fourth, the Terriers struck another run home after an RBI double from Roncin, but a huge play from Kayla Smith to get the runner out at home would slash Boston U's momentum and get the Royals back on offense.
After a tough half-inning for Queens, the Terriers were able to score five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Royals were able to get out of the inning with two strikeouts and a fielder's choice, leaving three Terriers on base.
Ricard would finish off the day in the circle for the Terriers allowing only one Queens hit and swipe 11 strikeouts, aiding the Terriers in the 7-0 win. Ricard's record now stands at 4-0.
Courtney went three and one-third innings of work allowing six hits, two runs, and swiped one strikeout on the day. Abby Craver came in relief pitching two and two-third innings, pitching four strikeouts and allowing six hits and five runs.
