Royals Look to Defend Curry Arena on Tuesday Night Against South Carolina State

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens returns to Curry Arena for a Tuesday night non-conference women's basketball contest against South Carolina State. The Royals look to put together back-to-back victories, after defeating USC Upstate by a score of 65-58 in Spartanburg, S.C. last time out.

THE MATCHUPS 
The series history with the Bulldogs is tied at 1-1. The Royals fell on the road 58-76 in the last meeting in Orangeburg, S.C. Jordyn Weaver led Queens with 19 points and nine rebounds in last season's match up. Queens women's basketball made history by earning its first-ever victory over a Division I program by defeating South Carolina State in the first meeting in Curry Arena on Nov. 10, 2022. 

SCOUTING THE ROYALS (2-3 overall, 0-0 ASUN) 

  • Queens comes into Tuesday's contest averaging 64.0 points per game while allowing 67.6.  

  • Offensively, the team shoots 39.2 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from three-point range, with an average of 5.8 three-pointers per game.  

  • Free-throw shooting has been inconsistent at 60.0 percent, averaging 10.2 made free throws per game. They are evenly matched on the boards, averaging 37.2 rebounds per game, which is slightly ahead of opponents' 37.0, giving them a slim rebound margin of 0.2. 

  • Junior, Jordyn Weaver leads the team with 12.6 points per game, shooting an efficient 52 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line, while also contributing 5.8 rebounds per game.  

  • Ana Barreto is another standout, averaging 11.0 points per game with a strong shooting performance from three-point range at 40.0 percent. Last time out Barreto set a career high in points (19), three pointers made (5), and three pointers attempted (11).  

  • Jermany Mapp adds 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, making her a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor.  

  • Defensively, Magda Freire and Tiziana Huici bring energy to the Royals, combining for 12 steals across the first five games. 

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS (1-5 overall, 0-0 MEAC) 

  • South Carolina State University's women's basketball team has had a challenging start to the 2024-2025 season with a 1-5 record, including a 1-4 record at home and a 0-1 record on the road.  

  • The Bulldogs come into the contest averaging 46.5 points per game while allowing opponents 63.2 points, creating a scoring margin of under 16.7.  

  • Offensively, the team struggles with shooting efficiency, converting 32.1 percent from the field and only 18.5 percent from beyond the arc, with just 2.0 three-pointers made per game.  

  • Free-throw shooting is slightly better for the Bulldogs at 65.4 percent, averaging 14.5 made free throws per game.  

  • Key players to watch include Angie Juste-Jean, who is leading the team with 14.7 points per game on an impressive 61.9 percent shooting from the field and an 81.0 free-throw percentage. Jada Morgan contributes 7.5 points per game and has been one of the team's most durable players, appearing in all six games.  

  • Defensively, Taniya McGowan and Monajah Ford are active, with both McGowan and Ford leading South Carolina State in steals (8).  

  • Norfolk State tied with Howard as the preseason favorites to finish first with 117 points each. The two-time reigning MEAC champions, Norfolk State, racked up 11 of 16 first-place votes. Coppin State was predicted to finish third with 79 points, with a one-point separation from tying North Carolina Central in fourth place. Morgan State and Maryland Eastern Shore were picked to finish fifth and sixth, respectively, with Delaware State and South Carolina State rounding out the predicted order of finish.
