CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A battle between No. 1 Queens University of Charlotte and No. 10 Florida Southern College is set for Sunday's NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse South Region Final at the Queens Sports Complex.
The top-seeded Royals advanced to their fifth NCAA quarterfinal in five appearances after defeating fourth-seeded Tampa on Friday by a score of 16-13.
Rebecca Kinsley led the Royals with four goals while
Shannon Kingston added three goals. Attacker
Kaitlyn Hardin and midfielders
Sydney Bracken,
Shannon Donovan, and
Kyleigh Masteran each chipped in with two goals and one assist.
Caroline Krauch wrapped the scoring with one on the day.
Second-seeded Florida Southern advanced to Sunday's game after defeating third-seeded Wingate, 19-6. Brenna Smith totaled five points on four goals and one assist while Madison Tare totaled five points on three goals and two assists. Abby McFerren added four goals and Ellie Griffin chipped in with three. Haley Daleo recorded four points on one goal and three assists.
This season, Queens is led by a pair of super seniors in Kinsley and Masteran. Kinsley, an attacker, totals 126 points on 69 goals and 57 assists while Masteran, a midfielder, has 107 points on 86 goals and 21 assists. Kinsley also set a new single-season point record this year while Masteran set a new single-season goal record. Additionally, Kinsley leads the nation in points and ranks sixth in assists while Masteran ranks third in goals and seventh in points.
Daleo leads the Mocs with 78 points on 56 goals and 22 assists this season while McFerren has 76 points on 44 goals and 32 assists.
Though the Royals trail in the all-time series with the Mocs, 8-2, Queens is on a two-game winning streak after defeating the Mocs, 12-9, in late February. Masteran led Queens with four goals while Kinsley added two goals and two assists for four points.
Shannon Donovan recorded three assists to lead in the category, and Kingston and
Kaitlyn Hardin each scored twice. McFerren and Smith each scored twice for the Mocs in the game.
When comparing each team's attack, Queens and Florida Southern have the top two ranked scoring offenses in the nation with the Royals averaging 21.75 goals to the Mocs' 18.16 goals per game.
