SUMTER, S.C. - The No. 9 Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team used four singles victories to storm from behind defeating No. 14 Wingate University to claim the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Championship title. The championship is the Royals third SAC title in program history as they have defeated Wingate in each of their meetings this season.
Despite
Viktorija Veselinova and
Caity Klaassen's efforts at No. 2 doubles to claim their win 7-5, Wingate took the doubles point winning two out of three, at No. 1 and No. 3.
Singles play opened with the Royals clinching the first singles point of the day at No.1 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) by
Viktorija Veselinova. Sophomore
Jill Morse would claim victory at No. 2 (6-3, 7-6 (7-4) giving the Royals a 2-1 advantage.
Marie Bertran De Balanda led the way as she grabbed the win against Lopez at No. 4 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Katya Khramtcova would remain resilient coming from behind to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. With that win, Khramtcova clinched the championship for the Royals as her teammates stormed the court.
The Royals secured their spot at the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Regional Championships on May 6. Fans should stay tuned for more information on who the Royals will face in the coming weeks.
