SUMTER, N.C. - The top-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team (14-1, 11-1 SAC) opened postseason play with a solid 4-0 sweep over No. 8-seeded Lincoln Memorial University in the SAC Women's Tennis Championship Quarterfinals at the Palmetto Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. The Royals advance to face Newberry tomorrow, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. for a spot in the conference finals.
Doubles play kicked off as the Queens' duo
Viktorija Veselinova and
Caity Klaassen won 6-0 in the second flight followed by a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles by
Hanna Axelsson and
Amelie Allard to secure the early lead for the Royals. As for the resilient duo of
Jill Morse and
Marie Bertran De Balanda at No.1, the pair held a 3-3 score before going unfinished due to the Royals claiming the doubles point.
In singles play, the Royals swept the match win with three dominating victories at Nos. 1, 4 and 5.
Viktorija Veselinova won on the top court 6-2, 6-3 while
Marie Bertran De Balanda won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.
Caity Klaassen would close out the singles wins on the No. 5 court with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Hanna Axelsson held a lead of 6-3, 3-5 at No. 3, while
Jill Morse and
Katya Khramtcova were both fighting for a point before going unfinished as the Royals claimed the match 4-0.
Queens will now quickly transition and prepare for the Wolves at 1:00 p.m. in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, No. 5 Wingate and No. 7 Carson-Newman will fight for a spot in the championship.
