WISE, VA – The Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team (13-1, 11-1 SAC) saw seven seniors lead the charge defeating UVA Wise 6-1 on Saturday afternoon to claim a share of the 2021-22 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championships. The regular season title marks the first time in program history that the Royals have won the South Atlantic Conference regular season title.
"This is such a special team—a really amazing group of women," emphasized Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "They're smart, tough, and hard-working. They have really come together this season, and our seniors have led the way—just like they did on court today. This senior class has left an indelible mark on the tennis program and we will miss them so much. For now, though, we still need their leadership as we have more tennis to play!"
The Royals kicked off the afternoon securing the doubles point beginning with a 6-3 win from the duo of
Grace Sheldrick and
Walker Gagnon at No. 2. On the No. 3 court,
Amelie Allard and
Victoria Kilbourne emerged victorious winning 6-1.
Head Coach
Billy Boykin had high praise for his doubles pairings this afternoon. "Tori and Amelie were awesome for us today. They have great on-court chemistry together, and they are both terrific shot-makers which makes them a fun team to watch."
Additionally, Boykin praised his No. 3 duo by saying, "Walker and Grace offer a good balance of power and precision. They have complimentary skillsets and they really worked well together out there today to secure the doubles point for us."
Hanna Axelsson began singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep at No. 2, followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win from
Katya Khramtcova at No. 3. Seniors'
Grace Forbes and
Kate Halickman both clinched the match decision with a 6-0, 6-0 respectively at No. 4 and No. 6, while Amelia Allard collected one of the final points for the Royals at No. 5.
Queens will turn their attention to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament which will begin on Thursday, April 21
