Royals Cross Country Post Top 8 Finishes in First ASUN Championships

RESULTS
HUNTSVILLE, ALA -
The Queens University of Charlotte cross country teams posted outstanding ASUN Championship debuts as both teams turned in top eight finishes. The women raced to a sixth place finish while the men took eighth in their first D1 championships.

"Both of these results are our starting points as we head into this new chapter in the ASUN," said Head Coach Jake Krolick. "We now have points of reference on where we are and what we want to build towards. The standard is high in the ASUN with the Eastern Kentucky men and Lipscomb women being national level programs. A combination of hard work and development as well as recruiting will be the emphasis as we move forward."

On the women's side, freshman Letizia Martinelli continued to shine leading the way with a top 20 finish with a time of 17:27:60. Natalia Bash, Katharina Krosta, Natalia Hidalgo, and Kira Ribbink finished in the Top 50 and Sarah Watts placed in the top 60. In total, the women's race saw 113 participants from 14 programs.

"The ladies saw 30-second improvements from Kathi Krosta and Natalie Bash from our first trip to Huntsville in September. We had strong debuts from Weronika Ptaszynska and Natalia Hidalgo-Martinez solidifying our top five. I am excited to see what this group does heading into track season."

On the men's side, Mitchell Cox led the way placing 15th with a time of 24:08:90. Mathurin Boutte finished 33rd with a time of 24:44:90 and Lance Sotelo finished in the top 60 with a time of 25:32:80.

"The men saw Mitch Cox make a big improvement from his September result running a personal best for the 8k. He beat a handful of guys who beat him in September so those things were very encouraging. The work that Mitch has put in the last 12 months has been validated by this fall and is an example for our younger guys on what is needed to compete at this level. Mathurin Boutte also had a strong season debut that helped the team score."

After the races, Letizia Martinelli and Mitch Cox were named Third Team All-ASUN for their performances at the championships. Women's preseason favorite Liberty took second while Lipscomb emerged as the champions. For the men, Eastern Kentucky was crowned as the champions after being picked second in the preseason rankings.
