ATLANTA, GA. – For the first time in program history, the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team swept the ASUN weekly honors, as officially announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon. On the week,
Felipe Mendonca was named Player of the Week,
Axel Horrocks garnered Goalkeeper of the Week praise, and
Samuel Idinge was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.
"We are very proud of our team," stated Head Coach
Oliver Carias. "All of our honors this week are well deserved and earned by our team. We have been progressing and adjusting throughout the season and our boys are playing great on both ends. We have been creating a lot of chances to score and we have scored five goals in the last two games. On defense, we turned in two clean sheets which was a result of our whole team's commitment to defending with pride."
Coming off his fourth career hat trick, graduate student
Felipe Mendonca was rewarded with Player of the Week honors. The Salvador, Brazil native found the back of the net three times in the first half of the match against Jacksonville on Saturday night marking the first hat trick of the season by an ASUN player. Mendonca ripped a season-high seven shots in the weekend victory as he maintains his offensive rhythm. The hat trick moved Mendonca up to eighth all-time in program history with 24 career goals.
In goal, freshman
Axel Horrocks earned both starts on the week and capitalized with a pair of complete game shutouts. The Merlo, Argentina native faced a season-high 13 shots at UNC Wilmington and picked up six saves. In just his second career start, Axelsson took down a Seahawks squad that was ranked ninth in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region rankings. In the Saturday showdown with Jacksonville, the Royals defense helped the rookie by only surrendering five total shots with one making it to goal.
A pivotal part of that Royals defense was sophomore
Samuel Idinge as he was named Defender of the Week. The Saint Petersburg, Fla. native was a force on the Queens backline which turned in two shutouts. Despite facing 13 shots against a relentless UNC Wilmington attack, Idinge limited their open looks to just six and carried over that momentum against Jacksonville. Against the Dolphins, the five total shots tied a season low by an opponent.
The weekly honors mark the second time this season that the Royals have been recognized after goalkeeper
Javier Izquierdo-Cuervo was named Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 20, 2022. The recognition marked the first time in Queens Athletics history that a Royal was awarded ASUN weekly honors.
