ALLENDALE, Mich.- The 2021 NCAA DII Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships closed today with seven Royals competing on the final day. Highlighting the Championship was

"Our group of women had an awesome meet," said Queens director of track & field and cross country
Jim Vahrenkamp. "They each competed hard and represented the program so well. I cannot say enough good things about each of them. This group finishes as one of if not the most successful groups we have had at a championship. Once we add one or two more to this group, we can begin to think about climbing onto the podium as a team. This weekend was an essential step in that process. I am looking forward to more of the same in the next few years as this group matures and progresses."
Melanie Welsing is the first athlete from the women's track & field team to win a national championship since 2016 and she is just the third in program history. Welsing earned the title clocking a time of 13.43 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles which is a new program record. She finished ahead of
Elise Ulseth who took eighth place with a time of 13.93 seconds and also earned All-American honors in the event.

"This is historically the most competitive year in the history of the NCAA on the men's side," Vahrenkamp added. "We competed well and came away with some hardware. Martin and Seb continued their progression at the national level with some great competitions. Jan Lukas and Adam got some great experience at the NCAA level."
As a group, the Royals had a record number of student-athletes competing at this year's outdoor championships with nine qualifiers.
"Having this many people at a championship made it a great experience," Vahrenkamp continued. "We spent some time seeing Lake Michigan and just made great memories spending time with each other. Next year the goal is to bring a few more people to the meet and continue climbing up the team results. This was such a great result in a challenging year."
