CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The top-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team is set to play in its first-ever NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse National Championship game tomorrow after defeating fourth-seeded East Stroudsburg in the semifinals on Friday afternoon. The fifth-ranked Royals will face second-seeded Lindenwood in the Championship in Salem, Virginia at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
The Royals (14-1), advanced to Sunday's Championship after defeating the Warriors 17-14 for their 12
th win in a row.
Ally Blood led with eight points on four goals and four assists while
Shannon Donovan added four goals as well.
Rachel Perrett recorded a hat trick and an assist for four points while
Kara Blanchard recorded two assists and one goal. On the defensive end,
Grace Guglielmo finished with four caused turnovers while
Sara Mitrecic totaled eight saves in the cage.
The Lions (16-1) are currently ranked second in the nation. They topped third-seeded and 15
th-ranked Roberts Wesleyan, 12-9, to advance to the Championship. Erin McGuire led with six points on four goals and two assists while Emma Arnold and Meghan Rea each scored two goals. Eleanor Kast finished with five saves.
This season, the Royals are led by a trio of attackers in Blanchard, Blood, and Perrett. Blood has 78 points on 29 goals and 49 assists while Blanchard has 77 points on 43 goals and 34 assists. Perrett leads in goals with 49 on the season. She also has 20 assists to total 69 points and leads the Royals in draw controls with 68. Additionally,
Kyleigh Masteran ahs 43 points while
Shannon Donovan and
Sydney Bracken have 38 and 31 points, respectively. In goal,
Sara Mitrecic is 11-1 with a 44.6 save percentage and a 8.42 goals against average.
McGuire leads Lindenwood with 91 points on 42 goals and 49 assists this year. Lexy Biller has 46 points on 40 goals and six assists while Sutton Page (33g, 4a) and Arnold (27g, 10a) each have 37 points. Carly Fedorowski has 35 points and Emma Wildhart has 29 points. Lindsey Smith and Rea each boast 23 points on the year. In goal, Kast is 10-1.
The Royals and the Lions have faced off against each other five times in the past with Lindenwood winning every meeting. They have competed against one another twice in the NCAA Championships as the Lions knocked the Royals out of tournament play in 2016 and 2017 in the quarterfinal round. In their last meeting on February 17, 2018, Queens fell 13-4 with Blood and Masteran each scoring once in the loss.
The NCAA will be operating this weekend's events at 50 percent capacity due to local and state guidelines which will allow for 500 fans. Tickets will be sold at the gate. Fully vaccinated individuals at NCAA Championships are not required to wear masks at outdoor championships. The NCAA encourages those who are not vaccinated to wear a mask. Masks are always required indoors at the championships by everyone.
