CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The top-seeded and fifth-ranked Queens University of Charlotte Royals will see a familiar opponent in the NCAA DII South Region Championship on Sunday, May 16 when they face No. 13 Limestone University. The meeting will be the third of the season between the pair of South Atlantic Conference schools, and it will be the first meeting in history between two SAC schools in the South Region Championship.
The 12-1 Royals lead the series with the Saints this season, 2-0, having defeated them once during the regular season and once for the SAC Championship. Limestone leads the all-time series, 20-6, though the Royals are currently riding a three-game win streak against the league rival. The Saints last defeated Queens during the 2018 season winning 12-8.
Sunday will be the Royals' first game since April 25 when they defeated the Saints by a score of 18-14 to win their seventh straight SAC Championship title. Queens was led by
Kara Blanchard, who totaled an impressive eight points on four goals and four assists, while
Ally Blood and
Rachel Perrett each contributed seven points. Additionally,
Shannon Donovan and
Sydney Bracken both lent helping hands with three points on a pair of goals and an assist. Following the game,
Sara Mitrecic was named Tournament MVP while Blanchard, Donovan, Perrett,
Grace Guglielmo, and
Sydney Hussey were named to the all-tournament team as well.
Limestone's Julia Foster totaled six points in the loss on one goal and five assists while Gracie DePaul led in goals with four. Rachel Denney added three goals and an assist for four points as well.
In the first-round game on Friday, the second-seeded Saints trailed the third-seeded Trojans of Mount Olive at the half, 5-4. They then fell behind by as much as three goals, 8-5, in the second half before scoring three unanswered points to tie the game up, 8-8, and force overtime. Foster then scored the game-winner to advance her team to the South Region Championship.
The Royals enter the game with several offensive threats and the second-best scoring offense (18.92) in Division II. They also have the third largest scoring margin (11.62). Perrett leads in goals with 42 this season. She also has 19 assists for a total of 61 points. Blanchard leads in points with 69 on 39 goals and 30 assists while Blood is not far behind with 68 points on 25 goals and a nationally sixth-ranked 43 assists.
Kyleigh Masteran and Donovan follow with 39 and 30 points, respectively, while Bracken,
Carson Giordano, and
Caroline Pearce also have 20-plus points on the season.
Limestone is led by Britannie Ouimet who has 72 points this season on 35 goals and 37 assists. Foster has 56 points on 38 goals and 18 assists, and Denney has 48 points on 34 goals and 14 assists. Additionally, Elizabeth Muscella has 37 points while DePaul, Lauren Chong, and Megan Davis each have 20-plus points on the year.
