WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's track and field teams continued their dominance throughout day two of the South Atlantic Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships to secure their third-straight Championship titles this afternoon. Queens' men totaled 167 points to come out ahead of Wingate who totaled 108 points while the women recorded 203.5 points to finish ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne who had 123.5 points.
In addition to walking away as Champions, the Royals will return to Charlotte with many individual awards. Queens director of track and field and cross country
Jim Vahrenkamp earned SAC Coach of the Year honors for the third year in a row after leading both programs to a third sweep. Freshman runner
Madison Webster was named SAC Women's Freshman of the Year while
Jennifer Koehne earned SAC Women's Track Athlete and Field Athlete of the Meet recognition. On the men's side,
Felix Wammetsberger was named SAC Men's Track Athlete of the Meet.
In total, Queens' women won seven events recording seven NCAA DII provisional marks. Koehne highlighted the two-day meet for Queens picking up wins in the 200-meter run, the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump, and the long jump. She set new meet records in the long jump, 200-meter run, and 60-meter hurdles while also recording provisional marks 200 and the long jump.
Stevie Lawrence-Wrist also picked up a first-place finish in the mile with a time of 5:13.60 with Webster taking second in 5:14.97 and
Allyson Arellano taking third in 5:15.43. Distance runner
Gillian Kasitz also performed well taking second in the 800-meter run in 2:23.73 while Hayley Love earned third place in the 3,000-meter in 10:23.91. Additionally,
Natane Deruytter took fifth place in the 5,000-meter run in 18:20.77.
Queens also saw wins yesterday when
To'Mara Carmichael took the top step in the weight throw with an DII provisional mark of 17.71-meters and when
Melanie Welsing claimed first in the pentathlon with a DII provisional score of 3,352 points.
On the men's side, the Royals won five events recording one NCAA DII provisional mark. Wammetsberger earned his award after finishing first in the mile in 4:18.77, second in the 800-meter run in 1:56.34, and third in the 3,000-meter run in 8:37.32. In general, the men's distance runners were strong nearly sweeping the podium in all three events as
Seb Anthony finished first in the 800-meter run and
Yannik Duppich took first in the 3,000-meter run. Duppich recorded a DII provisional time of 8:23.42 for his win. Additionally,
Adam Wright took third in the 800 and fourth in the mile.
Niklas Klei also had a good meet taking second place in the 400-meter with a time of 49.68-seconds, fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.83-meters, and fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.17-meters. Additionally,
Ricko Meckes earned first-place in the heptathlon recording 4,505 points.
The Royals'
Anthony Raftis also picked up a win on day one in the men's 5,000-meter run before finishing second in today's 3,000-meter run.
Next up for the Royals is the NCAA DII Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on March 13-14.
