Royals Pick Up Conference Road Win at Wingate

Queens hands Wingate only its second home loss of the season in a split of Wednesday’s doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINGATE, N.C. – Kelly Winter hit her second home run in as many games, Courtney Pearson picked up her second-straight complete-game win, and the Queens University of Charlotte softball team (20-10; 8-6 SAC) split its Conference doubleheader against Wingate University (29-15; 8-8 SAC) on Wednesday in Wingate, N.C.

Queens came out victorious in game one by a final score of 3-2. Wingate responded by pitching a shutout in game two, going on to take the win, 3-0. With its win in game one, Queens handed Wingate only its second home loss of the season, moving its home record to 18-2.

Game One: Queens 3, Wingate 2

Pearson held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first five innings, and after Winter put a fifth-inning, 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a 3-0 Royals' lead, Pearson and the Royals were able to hold the Wingate bats down just enough in order to pick up a 3-2 win over the home team in game one.

The win in the circle improves Pearson's record to 13-3 this season. She has now pitched complete-game wins in back-to-back games, both against Conference opponents, and has earned wins in five of her last six appearances.

Sydney Ditto helped Queens put up the game's first crooked number when she singled home Gerlea Patton in the top of the first inning. Patton, who led off the game with a walk before advancing to second base on a fielder's choice, leads the Royals in runs this season with 21.

Both teams then remained scoreless up until the fifth inning, at which point Winter teed off on a full-count pitch for her second home run of the season to put the Royals up 3-0. The two-run shot was ultimately the game-winning hit as the Bulldogs crossed home plate twice in the sixth inning but were shut down from that point on as Queens escaped with the victory.

Game Two: Wingate 3, Queens 0

Wingate pitcher Aubrey Reep picked up her 14th win of the season in game two, the second-highest win total in the SAC this season, as the Royals were unable to force any runs home in game two, falling 3-0.

Shannon McGuire got the start in the circle for Queens and pitched 5.0 innings before giving way to Kate Hunter for the final three outs. The three runs against McGuire were all earned, while she allowed seven hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts. Her record moves to 6-5 on the season.

McGuire held Wingate off the scoreboard until the third inning when the Bulldogs plated two on solo home runs from the leadoff spot and the three-hitter in the lineup. They added another run in the fifth with a bases-loaded walk for their third in final run.

Hunter entered for Queens to pitch the sixth inning and retired the side in 11 pitches.

Offensively, the Royals mustered just two hits against Reep, as McKenzie McCullen and Sara Ingoldsby were able to each record singles.
