CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team, ranked No. 19 in the latest Oracle/ITA National Poll, opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 7-0 shutout of Mars Hill University on Sunday afternoon at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.
"This was a ood opening weekend for our team," said Queens Head Tennis Coach
Billy Boykin. "We will learn from these matches and keep working to improve."
The Royals won all three doubles matches, beginning with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 by the duo of
Isabel Fornies and
Caity Klaassen. The No. 3 team of
Kate Halickman and
Hannah Lehfeldt won 6-2 followed by a 6-4 win at No. 1 by Katya Khramstova and
Viktorija Veselinova.
Sophomore
Yana Fleyer started singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1, while fellow sophomore
Sasha Davidzenka was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the No. 2 spot. Veselinova's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 gave Queens the fourth point it needed to secure the match win.
Queens completed the shutout with wins from Fornies (6-2, 6-2), Klaassen (6-1, 6-0) and Khramstova (4-6, 6-1, 10-1).
Queens has nearly two weeks away from competition before traveling to Newberry, S.C. for a neutral site matchup with No. 25 Georgia College at 1 p.m.
