COLUMBUS, GA. – Appearing in the NCAA Southeast Regional for the third time in the last four years, the 23rd-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 17 Tusculum College on Saturday afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
The Royals and Pioneers took the court against one another for the third time this season, as Tusculum gained an early 3-0 advantage following doubles play with three wins by the same 8-4 score.
Singles competition opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win by the nation's 66th-ranked singles player in freshman
Yana Fleyer at No. 2 for her 18th consecutive singles win.
Sophomore teammate
Isabel Fornies followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 to earn the Royals' second point of the match before the Pioneers claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. Tusculum's Julia Lopez needed three sets in the final singles slot to seal the match victory.
Queens, the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Champion, finishes the season with a 16-4 overall record. The 16 wins are tied for the highest win total for the women's program since winning 20 matches during the 2009-10 season.
The Royals earned five total SAC All-Conference award, including Fleyer's honor as the best freshman in the league, a first for a Queens player since the 2015 season.
