CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Queens University of Charlotte's women's tennis team, ranked No. 39 in the nation, opened postseason play in the South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over Anderson University (S.C.) on Tuesday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Royals extended their win streak to four matches in a row, shutting out each opponent in as many tries. Third-seeded Queens advances to the tournament semifinals for the fifth consecutive season, moving past the first round each year since joining the SAC prior to the 2013-14 season.
Doubles competition opened with the Royals earning a convincing 8-1 win at No. 1 by the 41st-ranked freshman duo of
Sasha Davidzenka and
Yana Fleyer.
The No. 3 tandem of junior
Hannah Lehfeldt and senior
Caroline Nielsen followed with an 8-3 win before sophomore
Isabel Fornies and senior
Carlotta Nassi teamed together for an 8-6 win in the No. 2 position.
Queens opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Fornies at No. 5 as Davidzenka's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 gave the Royals their fifth point to end the match. The Royals finish the 2018 season with an 8-1 record at their home complex.
"After sweeping the doubles matches, we were confident going into singles," said Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "Isabel played a great singles match and Sasha clinched the victory for us today. We are looking forward to the semifinals this Friday."
The Royals return to the court on Friday, April 20, as they take on No. 16 Tusculum College in the SAC Championship Semifinals. The two teams will play a neutral site match at the Cayce Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C. at 9 a.m.
