NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team defeated Newberry College Wednesday in a South Atlantic Conference matchup, winning 8-1 at the Oakland Tennis Center.
"We were better out of the gates today and our start helped us take all three doubles points," said Head Tennis Coach
Billy Boykin. "We carried the momentum into singles plays play and didn't look back. I'm proud of our girls for keeping their focus and competing well."
The Royals tallied all three points in doubles play with senior
Caroline Nielsen and
Hannah Lehfeldt winning the No. 1 spot 8-3.
Carlotta Nassi and
Isabel Fornies took the No. 2 spot winning 8-5, and the 21st-ranked freshman duo of
Yana Fleyer and
Sasha Davidzenka tallied Queens' final point in doubles play in the No. 3 spot 8-6.
In singles play, Queens won five out of the six matchups with Fleyer finishing first, winning in just two sets 6-2, 6-3. Davidzenka took the No. 2 spot also winning in two sets 7-6, 6-3, with teammate Nassi finishing behind her in two sets 6-1, 6-4. Lehfeldt and Nielsen won their matchups in one lone set each 8-1and 8-2, respectively, to tally the final points.
The Royals will host Lincoln Memorial University next in another South Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday, March 17. Play will begin at Noon at the Queens Sports Complex.
