Women's Basketball Hosts Newberry in Play4Kay Game

 – Following back-to-back road games against nationally ranked opponents, the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team returns home to host Newberry College in the program's annual Play4Kay game.

Opening tipoff is set for 6 p.m. inside Curry Arena. Live statistics will be provided by the Queens Athletic Department and a live broadcast of the event will be provided by the Queens Sports Network with Phil Constantino. and Reginald Walker Jr.

The game is a part of a nationwide fundraiser for the Kay Yow Foundation, which is dedicated to helping extend and improve the lives of women who are battling cancer by raising money for research. Throughout the month of February, all 11 SAC institutions will take part in the Play4Kay initiative as a collaborative effort to raise money and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Fans are asked to wear pink to the game to show support towards women's cancer victims. Queens Play4Kay shirts are now on sale, and all of the proceeds from t-shirt sales go directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Shirts can be purchased by contacting Danielle Nicosia via email (
nicosiad@queens.edu). All shirts are being sold for $10 leading up to the game and will increase to $12 each at the game.

 
Supporters can also donate directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund through the official Royals Athletics fundraising page, which can be found here. The department will also be collecting physical donations on the day of the game.

The Series

Newberry has won all nine games of the series, including a 61-50 win over the Royals on January 10 in Newberry, S.C.

Newberry led 15-8 after the opening period of play before extending its lead to double figures with 5:43 remaining in the opening half. Queens cut the Newberry lead to singles digits on a jumper from freshman Caitlyn Moore and got within three points of tying the score following a three-pointer from Ceara Leavai with 1:32 left in the second quarter. However, the Wolves ending the frame on a 7-2 run to build a 35-27 advantage at intermission.
 
The second half began with Queens using eight unanswered points, including seven from junior Lade Adepoju to tie the score at 35-all. Newberry ended the run with back-to-back three-pointers, building a lead it never relinquished for the remainder of the contest.
 
Newberry's Meg Essex led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year, while junior Shelby Britten followed with 17 points of her own.
 
Adepoju led the Royals attack with 17 points and 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double, as Moore chipped in 11 points and five rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Sophomore Madison Turlington was one point away from a career-high with seven points off of the bench, while Leavai and freshman Herning Wang also tallied seven points each.

-Queens most recently fell in overtime 112-66 to #3 Carson-Newman University on Saturday in Jefferson City, Tenn. In the Royals latest victory, the team defeated Mars Hill 65-62 for its first SAC win of the year.

-In the Royals victory versus Mars Hill, Adepoju registered career-highs of 27 points and 16 rebounds while making 9-of-16 shots from the floor and 9-of-11 attempts from the free throw line.

-Queens head coach Sarah Jansen collected her 50th career win with the triumph over the Lions.

- The Royals ranked fourth among SAC schools on defense, forcing 18.5 turnovers per contest. 

The Royals are led by Adepoju who averages 18.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest while shooting 55.3% from the floor. The Alicante, Spain native is the SAC's leading scorer and her field goal percentage also tops all qualified players. She also ranks sixth in the league in rebounds per game, including third overall with 2.78 offensive boards per contest.

-Kristian Eanes and Mendy McNeese also average double figures on offense with 10.1 and 10.9 points per game, respectively. Moore chips in 8.5 points per game and is shooting 37.7% from long range.

- Meg Essex leads the Newberry charge with 17.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.4% from the field.
 
-Shelby Britten and Nicola Handreck provide added scoring with 15.5 and 14.7 points per game, respectively.

-Newberry is 5-5 across its last 10 contests, most recently falling 68-43 at home to Anderson University.
 
-The Wolves force the fewest turnovers per contest (12.5) in the SAC but hold opponents to the third lowest shooting percentage (37.9) per game.
