CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's cross country team took home first place in the team competition at the Royals Cross Country Challenge hosted by Queens at McAlpine Creek Park on Friday. The men finished with a score of 37 points and an average time of 24:33.61 on the 8k course, to top the 22-team field. The Queens women's team finished in second place with a score of 61 and an average 5k time of 18:03.66.
The men placed 22 points ahead of Lee University (Tenn.), who totaled 59 points to take second. Lee entered the competition ranked No. 17 nationally by the USTFCCCA. Queens also edged seven other regionally ranked opponents in the process.
The women's team finished only behind Lee, which won the competition with a score of 52 and entered the event as the 15
th-ranked team in the country. The Royals knocked off 25
th-ranked Saint Leo University and other regionally ranked opponents en route to the runner-up result.
On the men's side, Queens placed four runners in the field's top 10 and were led by the performance of
Tom Bains who took third place with a time of 24:09.85. Bains was closely followed by teammates
Felix Wammetsberger and
Daniel Wallis, who took fourth and fifth place respectively.
Nick Kipkemei ran in ninth place.
Ronald Cheresek of Saint Leo posted the fastest time running in 23:48.85 to win the individual competition.
On the women's side,
Hannah Wolkenhauer was the top finisher for Queens, running in a time of 17:11.63.
Lucie Noall also posted a top-10 finish, taking ninth place.
Colett Rampf of Saint Leo took the top spot with a time of 17:05.99.
The Royals next compete as hosts of the Queen City Invite on Oct. 13, also to be contested at McAlpine Creek Park.
