JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Nationally 50th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis capped the regular season with a 6-3 victory at Carson-Newman University on Friday, April 14
With the victory, Queens (12-3, 9-2) has secured the No. 2 overall seed at next week's South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. The Royals quest to repeat as SAC Tournament Champions will begin next Friday at 1 p.m. as they have received a bye as a top-two seed.
While the day ended up all Royals, it didn't begin that way as Carson-Newman (8-9, 7-4) took doubles, 2-1. The Eagles took both the top and No. 2 match by the narrow identical scores of 8-6, while the QU team of
Ana Bolson and
Jaclyn Rock won the No. 3 match in shutout fashion, 8-0.
With the pressure fully on now, Queens responded like the former champions they are by winning five-of the-six singles contests to run away with the contest. In fact, after Carson-Newman won the first singles point at the third slot, the Royals took the final five points in succession.
The comeback started at the No. 2 spot where
Marta Gonzalez won by the identical scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Carlotta Nassi followed her and took down C-N's No. 1 Ali Harris in a three-set barn-burner, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
With the match now tied at 3-3, Queens completely took over as
Caroline Nielsen (6-1, 6-1),
Hannah Lehfeldt (7-5, 6-4) and
Isabel Fornies (6-4, 6-1) won the fourth, fifth and sixth matches, consecutively.
