CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 50 Queens University of Charlotte took down South Atlantic Conference co-leader and nationally 39th-ranked Tusculum College by the final of 7-2 on Saturday, April 1.
"This was our best performance of the year so far," said Queens head coach
Billy Boykin. "This group is still improving. We're excited for the stretch run."
An exciting stretch run is now possible for Queens (8-3, 6-2) as they took down South Atlantic Conference co-leader Tusculum (12-5, 7-1), and gave them their first conference loss.
The Royals were able to grab the momentum early with a 2-1 advantage in doubles, but it didn't come easy. First, the No. 2 pairing of
Hannah Lehfeldt and
Claire Hamilton eked out a hard-fought 8-6 win over Annie McCullough and Jule Brass.
The deciding point then came in the top flight as
Carlotta Nassi and
Marta Gonzalez won in the sixth tiebreaker over regionally-ranked Franziska Funke and Katarina Majorova, 9-8.
Coming off the high of the two nail biter doubles victories, Queens came out focused, motivated and took five-of-six matches in singles to run away with the victory. Nassi and Gonzalez once again featured heavily as they took care of business in the top two matches.
Queens will now head back out on the road as they head to Lincoln Memorial this upcoming Tuesday.
