CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 39- ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team continued their strong conference form by seeing off Lenoir-Rhyne with a score of 8-1. The win moves the Royals to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne dropped to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Caroline Nielson and
Hannah Lehfeldt won the first point for the Royals with an 8-0 victory over the Bear's Abbi Wood and Aguilar Di Camillo. They were soon followed by
Marta Gonzalez and
Melissa Laing who took the number one slot for the Royals defeating Emily Murchland and Marta Escanero Funes 8-4.
Carlotta Nassi and
Ana Bolson tallied the final doubles point with a hard fought 8-7 (7-5) win at number two over Iulia Ponomareva and Sara Kalkenova.
In singles play, Lehfeldt opened for the Royals with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Camillo at the number 5 slot. The Royals line four, Nielson, followed defeating Murchland 6-1, 6-0. Nassi would claim the number one point after a hard fought 2-6, 7-5, 10-2 win over the Bears No. 1 Kalkenova. Laing and Fornies would both take points, winning 6-2, 6-3, and 6-1, 6-4, respectively. At No. 2, Gonzalez would narrowly miss out, losing in a tough 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 match against Ponomareva from Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Royals will be back in action this Saturday, February 25 as they play host to Brevard College (0-4, 0-6). The match will begin at 1 p.m., and will be played at Freedom Park in Charlotte, N.C.
