WINGATE, N.C. – The 16
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's cross country team took first place at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday morning to claim the regional crown. The Royals compiled a team score of 76, finishing ahead of fellow South Atlantic Conference member Anderson University who took second with a total of 94.
As a result of the first-place finish, Queens earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, making the trip to the national tournament for the third season in a row.
"It's great to see the women come away with the win," said head coach
Kevin Licht. "They've worked hard to get to this level, and it's encouraging to see their dedication pay off."
Hannah Wolkenhauer led Queens by clocking a second place finish. The South Atlantic Conference individual champion ran the 6k course in a time of 21:29.57, running just behind the University of Mount Olive's Leah Hanle who won the race with a time of 21:15.43.
Lucie Noall of Queens took fifth place with a time 22:33.35,
Gillian Kasitz finished 18
th with a time of 23:16.55, and
Mandi Moxie placed 23
rd running in 23:27.22. Wolkenhauer, Noall, Kasitz and Moxie each took home All-Southeast Region honors as a result of their top 25 finishes.
The national tournament will be held Nov. 18, in Evansville, Indiana. At the national preview meet earlier this season, the Queens women placed third.
