CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team, seeded seventh in the
South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championships, will take on top-seeded Wingate University tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the championship title.
The Royals ended their regular season on a high note, defeating then No. 17 Lander University by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Queens went on to advance to the SAC Championships, upsetting second-seeded Carson-Newman University in the quarterfinal round, 3-2, in overtime.
On Friday, the Royals topped sixth-seeded Anderson, 2-0, to find themselves in the title match for the third time in five years. The Royals won the title in 2013 before falling to the Bulldogs in 2015.
SAC All-Conference First Team member
Edmundo Robinson leads the Royals with 28 points on 13 goals and two assists. His goal total leads the league and his point total ranks second. The junior forward has scored in each of the Royals' tournament matches.
Providing some backup for the Royals has been
Keegan Burton who totals 12 points this season on five goals and two assists. Additionally,
Juan Carlos Carrillo has eight points, while four others have six points. Goalkeeper
Sergio Lemus has picked up each win for the Royals in championship play. He has four shutouts this season.
The Wingate Bulldogs, the defending national champions, secured their fourth straight SAC Regular Season title at the end of the regular season. Both of their championship wins have been shutouts as they defeated eighth-seeded Newberry College, 3-0, before using a late scoring run in the semifinals to defeat fourth-seeded Lincoln Memorial University, 3-0.
Elliot Cutts leads the Bulldogs this season with 27 points after totaling 12 goals and three assists. Cutts ranks third in the SAC in both goals and points. Jon Ander has 17 points, while Elmer N'For and Felipe Checco each have 17 points. Goalkeeper Pablo Jara has six shutouts on the year. Wingate led the league with seven all-conference selections this season.
The Bulldogs took the regular season meeting between the two teams by a score of 4-1. N'For scored two goals in the win while Checco and Mattia Ditmmaso added one apiece. Robinson scored the lone goal of the match for Queens.
Wingate also took the last meeting in championship play defeating Queens, 2-0, in the 2015 SAC Championship Final game.
The Bulldogs lead the series, 6-0, since the Royals joined the SAC in 2013. Queens' last win over Wingate dates back to the 2003 season when Queens' head coach,
Oliver Carias, was a junior on the team.
Kickoff for the SAC Championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 5 at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.
