WINGATE, N.C. – The 10
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's cross country team took second place at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday morning. The Royals compiled a team score of 55, finishing just behind the University of Mount Olive who won the title with 50 points.
As a result of the top-three finish, Queens earns an invitation to the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, making the trip to the national tournament for the third season in a row.
"The men were outstanding today," said head coach
Kevin Licht. "We rested our No. 3 runner in order to be better prepared for Nationals, and to still be five points from the win was exciting. I'm looking forward to our preparation for the National Championships."
Nick Kipkemei recorded the best finish for the Royals, placing second with a time of 31:24.43 in the 10k race. Kipkemei finished less than one second behind race winner Silus Kipkoech of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, who ran in 31:23.55.
Felix Wammetsberger placed eighth with a time of 31:59.31, South Atlantic Conference individual champion
Tom Bains placed ninth with a time of 32:08.11,
Conal McCambridge (32:48.41) took 17
th, and
Tim Hoenig (32:51.28) took 19
th. Kipkemei, Wammetsberger, Bains, McCambridge and Hoenig all earned All-Southeast Region honors as a result of their top 25 finish.
The national tournament will be held Nov. 18, in Evansville, Indiana. Queens won the national preview meet earlier this season at the same venue.
