CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After collecting its first-ever program win in NCAA Championship competition, the fifth-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team will take the pitch tomorrow against top-seeded Carson-Newman University (17-0-1).
The Royals enter the
NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Southeast Region Semifinal game with an overall record of 12-2-3 after defeating fourth-seeded UNC Pembroke on Friday afternoon. Thea Mallet scored the game-winner on a free kick in overtime to secure the victory for Queens. The shutout win was the 11
th of the season for the Royals and the ninth for goalkeeper
Rachel Quest.
Mallet is the Royals' second-leading scorer this season trailing senior
Alana Jefferson. Jefferson has a total of 23 points on 10 goals and three assists while Mallet totals 17 points on eight goals and one assist. Mallet edges Jefferson in game-winners this season, 4-3, after the Royals' win on Friday.
Charlotte Ring has 12 points, and
Lulu Phan and
Emma Rose Stockton both have 10 points.
The Eagles are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation and have not dropped a single match this season. They earned a first-round bye and hosting rights after securing their third straight South Atlantic Conference Championship.
SAC Player of the Year Lauren Wade leads the Eagles with 42 points on 16 goals and 10 assists this year. The senior forward ranks among the top-10 in the nation in both points and assists. Magda Mosengo follows with 29 points on nine goals and 11 assists, while Holly Talbut-Smith has 21 points.
The Eagles took the meeting between the pair during the regular season by a score of 4-2. The Royals trailed, 4-0, before Jefferson and Phan found the back of the net in the final 20 minutes of action to give the match its final score. Queens last defeated Carson-Newman in the 2014 season winning 2-0 at home. Carson-Newman leads the series, 9-2.
Kickoff for Sunday's Southeast Regional Semifinal is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 12 at McCown Field in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
