ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team, ranked 13
th in the nation, closed their historic 2016 campaign this evening with a loss at the hands of No. 4 Lindenwood University in the second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championships. The Royals fell 13-4 to the Lions to end the year with an 18-3 record, while Lindenwood advances to Colorado with a 17-2 record.
Senior midfielder
Brittany Larranaga led the Royals with two goals, while
Kelly Dowd and
Hanna Scott each scored one. Dowd and Scott also tallied one assist apiece.
Christine Wiese totaled 10 saves in goal.
Trailing 2-0, Queens would see their first goal at 17:41 from Larranaga. The Lions then put two more points on the board before Dowd found the back of the net to make the score 4-2 with 8:36 to play. Another goal from Lindenwood in the final two minutes of the half would give the game a 5-2 score at the half.
After trading goals with the Royals at the start of the second, Lindenwood would run away with a 4-0 run. A goal from Scott at 13:12 made it a six point game, 10-4, but that was as close as the Royals would get as the Lions put three more balls in the back of the net before the final horn sounded.
The Royals were outshot 30-18, putting 11 shots on goal. Lindenwood was able to put 23 shots on goal. Queens was also edged in ground balls, 15-14, and lost the battle at the draw, 14-5.
Rachel Benzing and Amanda Schimpke each scored four goals to lead Lindenwood, while Allison Hurley added two goals. Rachel Ortell recorded seven saves in the win.
