Charlotte, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team found a 9-0 win on Saturday, April 9, 2016. The sweep gave Queens an overall record of 10-2 and a South Atlantic Conference record of 8-1. The loss pushed Carson-Newman to a 13-5 overall record and a 5-6 SAC record.
"I don't think we came with our best stuff today, but we competed hard when it mattered most," said Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "We showed some grit and determination on the big points."
Carlotta Nassi and
Caroline Nielsen quickly put a point on the board as they took the top doubles court in an 8-0 match.
Claire Hamilton and
Hannah Lehfeldt found the second point of the day to claim the third court in an 8-4 victory.
Marta Gonzalez and
Melissa Laing concluded the sweep with an 8-5 win in the No. 2 spot.
Continuing their momentum into singles play, Laing tabbed the first win with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Jill Corsato on court 3. Nassi secured the match point on court one finding a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-0 score to take the win over Ali Harris.
Adding, Gonzalez went 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 on court two while Nielsen found a single set, 8-6, win over Mallory Jackson on court four. Hamilton and Lehfeldt rounded out the day with wins in the fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Hamilton defeated Brooke Sanderson 9-8 (9-7) while Lehfeldt defeated Gabrielle Wood 8-5.
Queens will compete again on Tuesday, April 12 in a home match. The Royals will host Newberry at 1 p.m.
